“Don’t Be a Tool”

This month’s employee spotlight is on John McCarten, Account Manager supporting AEC and Government clients.  John joined Synergis 18.5 years ago as inside sales support and has grown into an integral part of the AEC Team, working with public sector clients, schools, and AEC and Construction firms in PA and NJ.  We are very fortunate to have John representing Synergis and Autodesk solutions.

John is known to leave a lasting impression with everyone he meets.   I’ve teasingly said it’s because of his British accent, but I truly believe it’s because of the tremendous relationships he’s established over the years.  John is viewed as an advisor and a friend – someone you would trust to steer you in the right direction and who wouldn’t let you down.  I’ve been told by many clients that he’s super responsive – even taking client calls on the weekend to help.

When we asked John what he enjoys most about working at Synergis, he shared: “I enjoy being part of a company that knows how important happy employees are to the success of the organization.”  He believes in the golden rule: treating others the way he would like to be treated.   And that’s probably why one of John’s mantras is “Don’t be a tool.”

John’s early life was mostly spent in Manchester, England after moving there with his family in 1972. There, he later studied Economics at Manchester Metropolitan University. He moved back to the US in 1992 but remains a staunch Manchester United fan.  If he could move anywhere in the world, he’d move back to Manchester which he believes is the “best city in the world.”

He and his wife, Lisa, share their home with nine feline family members which is probably why his favorite quote is by Sigmund Freud, “Time with cats is never wasted.” John’s love of cats has led to his volunteer work with a group called Stray Cat Blues where he helps look after feral cat colonies. He also participates in trap-neuter-release programs.  One of his fondest memories is when a very close friend commended John on the importance of the work he does looking after feral cats.

When John’s not working or saving cats, you can find him bicycling, savoring Indian food, or watching football (Manchester United). When asked about our Synergis Family Values, John shared that he embraces #12 – Have Fun because “I like to think if I am smiling, it will hopefully make at least one person I come in to contact with smile, and that might change their day.”
