With the new 2016 release of the Autodesk AutoCAD based application, 2 out of 5 of our AutoCAD customers have noticed a performance hit on their machine. Some of them have purchased high-end machines with more memory and a better processor to handle the workload of AutoCAD. Although, a new or tweaked machine will most likely increase your performance but knowing if certain areas of the application are causing the performance hit could save you time and money.
Autodesk Content Service
An indexing service that monitors the activity in watched folders on the computer where it is installed. While monitoring these watched folders, Autodesk Content Service continuously updates an index with critical metadata associated with all design files and design objects in those watched folders.
If you do not use content explorer for searching data on your network or elsewhere, you should disable this service which will help with startup time and in product functionality.
To disable Autodesk Content Service, browse to windows services
From the start menu, type services.msc
From the services section, scroll down to Autodesk Content Services
Right-click and select Stop
Right-click again and select Properties
Within the properties window, change the startup type to Disabled
Disable Autodesk Sync
Autodesk Sync is used to sync settings and drawings to Autodesk A360, so settings can be replicated on other machines where logged in.
To disable Autodesk Sync, navigate to Options > Online tab and uncheck “Sync my settings with the cloud” and “Enable cloud storage”
To permanently disable Autodesk Sync, you’ll need to uninstall Autodesk Sync from Add/Remove Programs or navigate to the following location in the registry and change the value of EnableSync to 0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Autodesk\Autodesk Sync
Revert preview and object selection to legacy functionality
With the new releases of AutoCAD based applications, Autodesk included enhanced tools for selecting objects and previewing objects before selection them. These tools are great but not necessary, especially on older hardware.
The object selection enhancement known as Selection Effect highlights the selected object with a glowing effect.
To disable Selection Effect, type the SELECTIONEFFECT on AutoCAD’s command line and change the value to 0.
- 0 = Dashed lines when objects are selected
- 1 = Glowing highlight of the selected objects
The other selection enhancement is known as the Selection Preview. This feature is used when hovering the cursor over an object, and object is highlighted indicating that will be the object selected if clicked.
To disable this feature, navigate to Options > Selection tab. Within the Preview section, uncheck both options “When a command is active” and “When no command is active“.
