To Vault or Not to Vault...That Is the Question – Part II
Author: Bill Frederick, Synergis Technical Director, Infrastructure & GIS Solutions
Type: PDF document

Description: In the previous article, we had discussed some of the options available to collaborate using AutoCAD Civil 3D. With use of X-references and Data shortcuts, users can accomplish most of their everyday tasks.
To follow-up with a more robust data collaboration option, we will look into another option provided by Autodesk… Autodesk Vault. Vault is a very powerful tool that will allow a majority of users to work to their fullest capacity sharing data and other Microsoft based products. So what is what and how can it be used?

To Vault or Not to Vault...That Is the Question – Part I

Description: So what is the answer? To be honest… every individual company holds the answer. If the pieces are not coming together, you should consider consulting an expert if you are struggling with the proper solution. There are many experts who have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly. I recently gave a presentation at Autodesk University 2007 on this topic and had many good responses and questions that arose, so I decided I would share the information with the masses.

CPD – Confused Point Disorder
Author: Bill Frederick, Director, Infrastructure and GIS Solutions
Type: PDF document
Date: 07-06-07
Description: Why do my points act the way they do and where did they go?
This has been an interesting topic surrounding Civil 3D. In past releases (pre 2008)
points and point groups behaved in a much different manner than they do now. We will
explore the basics of points and some of the differences between software releases.

Civil 3D – Grasping at Styles?
Author: Bill Frederick, Director, Infrastructure and GIS Solutions
Type: PDF Document
Date: 3-21-06
Details: Why are so many Autodesk users terrified to make the jump to AutoCAD Civil 3D? Part of the
reason is the new interface. Every aspect of the software is now controlled through Tool Space, a
collection of data, settings, and styles that are stored in the drawing. Yes, I did say, “Stored in the
drawing.” Civil 3D does not store data in external databases as Land Desktop had done
previously. This is a bit of culture shock for most of us seasoned Land Desktop users.

Grading Best Practices Supplement
Author: Autodesk
Type: PDF document
Date: 05-30-07
Description:This document explains the best way to use
the feature line grading and the projection slope grading. The
document includes grading scenarios which highlight various keys
for success. In addition to the normal PDF version, you can download
a CHM version that includes DWF graphics that you can view in
3D. From this document customers will learn how to:
- Edit feature lines and gain an understanding of how feature lines
are related to other Site-based geometry
- Apply the theory behind the projection grading for successful
site development
- Combine feature lines and projection grading techniques together
to resolve complex design scenarios
This 26-page paper is available in two
formats. The PDF version is best for reading and printing. The
CHM version presents the same content in the form of a Help file,
with web links to DWF files that illustrate some of the grading
concepts in three dimensions. The CHM file does not work across
a network, so please download it to your computer, and maintain
an active Internet connection to open the DWF files.
